Mission Recap – First Euro Tour Final For Joyce

Ryan Joyce made it two Team Mission finalists in a row on the European Tour after reaching the final of the European Darts Trophy yesterday.

‘Relentless’ had previously never been past the third round of a European Tour event, but enjoyed a memorable run in Göttingen as he reached his maiden stage final in the PDC.

The two-time Players Championship winner started his campaign with a 6-0 win against Joe Cullen on Friday night, before booking his spot in the final day after beating Dimitri Van den Bergh 6-4 in the second round.

Joyce then broke new ground with a 6-4 triumph over former world champion Rob Cross sending him through to Sunday night’s final session and a first European Tour quarter-final.

The breakthrough run continued for ‘Relentless’ as he averaged 99 in a 6-3 win over Cameron Menzies, setting up a semi-final clash with the European Tour’s most successful ever player Michael van Gerwen.

Joyce took out 121 and 110 finishes as he saw off van Gerwen 7-5 to progress to his first European Tour final, where a new winner was guaranteed as he faced Nathan Aspinall for the title.

In the final, ‘Relentless’ got off the mark with an 11 darter in leg two and kept close order to trail 4-3, before Aspinall won four of the next five legs to prevail as an 8-4 winner.

Joyce was one of three Team Mission players in action on the final day of the European Darts Trophy, with Mike De Decker and Wessel Nijman also making the third round.

The recent Belgian Darts Open finalist De Decker picked up wins against Martin Lukeman (6-3) and Peter Wright (6-4), before losing a nail-biting decider to Cameron Menzies (6-5).

Nijman won through a pair of deciders against Paul Krohne and Danny Noppert (6-5), before losing out to Gerwyn Price (6-3), whilst Ritchie Edhouse was beaten by the eventual champion Aspinall (6-5) after beating Kevin Doets (6-2).

Dominik Grüllich made his European Tour debut in front of a home German crowd on Friday, and was edged out 6-4 by Luke Woodhouse, whilst Alan Soutar averaged 99 in a 6-2 defeat to Menzies in the opening round.
