Byrne Doubles Up On The Women’s Series

Recap - Byrne Doubles Up On The Women’s Series

Robyn Byrne became only the seventh player to win multiple titles on the PDC Women’s Series after claiming her second event victory in Wigan on Sunday.

The 27-year-old had made history as the first player from Ireland to join the Women’s Series roll of honour when she won an event in Milton Keynes in May last year.

And Byrne joined the shortlist of multi-time winners after tasting success in Event 20 at the weekend, beating Lorraine Winstanley 5-2 in the final to scoop the £2,000 top prize.

Byrne also made the quarter-finals of Event 17 and the semi-finals of Event 19, banking a total of £2,800 to move up to eighth on the Women’s Series Order of Merit.

Rhian O’Sullivan made a pair of quarter-finals in Events 18 and 20 and sits in 10th spot on the rankings with one weekend of the season left to go.

Elsewhere at the weekend, Ryan Joyce fell just short of a first European Tour quarter-final after losing 6-5 to the world number one Luke Humphries in the Flanders Darts Trophy.

The 10th European Tour event of the year saw five players from Team Mission in action, with Ritchie Edhouse and Alan Soutar tasting first-round success in Antwerp, whilst Martin Lukeman lost out in a decider to Gabriel Clemens.

An all-Mission second-round tie saw Joyce edge past Soutar 6-5, aided by a stunning 161 finish late on in the contest. Josh Rock marked his return to action with a 103.66 average in a 6-0 whitewash over Jitse Van der Wal, whilst Edhouse was knocked out 6-3 by the top seed Humphries.

On Sunday, the reigning PDC world champion Humphries ended Joyce’s run in Belgium in a last-leg decider, and Rock also departed at the third-round hurdle with a 6-5 defeat to Chris Dobey.

Meanwhile, Archie Self caught the eye with a pair of last 16 runs in the England Masters and Classic men’s events in Selsey at the weekend. The 14-year-old also got to the semi-finals of the Classic youth event.

Connor Scutt reached the quarter-finals in the Masters men’s competition and in the women’s events Suzanne Smith made the last 16 of the Masters. Thomas Banks enjoyed a run to the final of the Classic youth event which has moved him into the top 10 of the WDF boys’ rankings.

Lewis Gurney won Friday’s qualifier in Selsey to earn a spot in the England men’s team for the British Internationals in March next year.

The previous weekend, Stephen Burton claimed his first win on the European Tour after beating Boris Krcmar in the first round of the German Darts Championship.

Dylan Slevin and Ritchie Edhouse also picked up wins in the opening round in Hildesheim, but the duo, along with Burton and Ryan Joyce, all tasted defeat in the last 32 the next day.

Connor Scutt saw his bid for Champions Week glory at the MODUS Super Series end at the semi-final stage on finals night in Portsmouth.

‘The Sniper’ was the first player to book their spot in finals night after topping Group A, and wins against Jimmy van Schie and Tom Sykes saw him advance to the last four of the series.

But the current Challenge Tour Order of Merit leader was denied in the semi-finals by the eventual champion Marvin van Velzen, who won their contest 4-2 before beating van Schie 4-3 in an all-Dutch final to pocket the £25,000 jackpot.

Elsewhere, Joe Croft successfully defended his ADC East of England title after beating Lee Barrow 7-5. Croft also won a qualifier on the same weekend to earn another spot in the MODUS Super Series later this year.

Hungary’s Balazs Szotak strengthened his qualifying bid for the WDF Boys World Championship at Lakeside after winning a title and reaching another final in Austria.

The 14-year-old beat Daniel Csoka 6-4 to lift the Carinthian Junior Darts Championship, before Csoka prevailed 6-5 in a rematch the next day in the final of the Carinthian Mountain Darts Youth Masters.

Team Mission was well represented in North Somerset for the recent Welsh Open and Classic weekend. Matthew Edgar bolstered his hopes of being a seed for the WDF Men’s World Championship with a run to the final of the Welsh Open, whilst Rhian O’Sullivan made the finals of both women’s events, losing 5-3 and 5-4 to the top seed Beau Greaves.
